Module E1 – Phonics & Letter Sounds

Module E1 — Phonics & Letter Sounds

This foundation module teaches learners how English letters produce sounds and how those sounds form the base of reading and pronunciation.

By mastering phonics, students develop strong reading confidence from the very beginning.

Theory — Understanding Phonics

Phonics is the method of teaching reading by connecting letters with the sounds they represent. Each letter or group of letters makes a specific sound.

By learning phonics, students can read new words by sounding them out instead of memorising them. This builds strong reading skills from the very beginning.

For example, the word “sun” is formed from three sounds: S – U – N.

Sound Examples (A – Z)

Say each sound clearly and slowly. Focus on how every letter produces a sound.

  • A – a as in Apple
  • B – b as in Ball
  • C – c as in Cat
  • D – d as in Dog
  • E – e as in Egg
  • F – f as in Fish
  • G – g as in Goat
  • H – h as in Hat
  • I – i as in Ink
  • J – j as in Jug
  • K – k as in Kite
  • L – l as in Lion
  • M – m as in Man
  • N – n as in Net
  • O – o as in Orange
  • P – p as in Pen
  • Q – q as in Queen
  • R – r as in Rat
  • S – s as in Sun
  • T – t as in Top
  • U – u as in Umbrella
  • V – v as in Van
  • W – w as in Water
  • X – x as in Box
  • Y – y as in Yellow
  • Z – z as in Zebra

Practice — Blend the Sounds (A–Z)

Now practise combining letter sounds to form simple words. Say each sound slowly, then blend them together smoothly.

  • B + A = Ba
  • C + A = Ca
  • D + A = Da
  • E + A = Ea
  • F + A = Fa
  • G + A = Ga
  • H + A = Ha
  • I + A = Ia
  • J + A = Ja
  • K + A = Ka
  • L + A = La
  • M + A = Ma
  • N + A = Na
  • O + A = Oa
  • P + A = Pa
  • Q + A = Qa
  • R + A = Ra
  • S + A = Sa
  • T + A = Ta
  • U + A = Ua
  • V + A = Va
  • W + A = Wa
  • X + A = Xa
  • Y + A = Ya
  • Z + A = Za

Welcome to your Phonics Skills Assessment
